If you've read about where the name Sugarjets comes from, it should be no big surprise that the fox and the hummingbird
have meaning as well. Not only do they infuse Sugarjets with treasured qualities of both of my parents,
but they also serve as gentle reminders of necessary life balance :

The Fox.In Native American culture, some tribes view the fox as a trickster, playing pranks on unsuspecting victims. That was my dad - all the way. He was punking people long before getting "punk'd" was an actual thing. And when he punk'd you, you could bet he planned the Hell out of it. Agonized over every detail. Then made a password-protected spreadsheet about it. And then made two back-up copies - and stored then in separate locations. And then made a spread sheet about THAT.
That's why so much fox symbolism reminds me of my dad :
When a fox hunts, it is said to resemble an arrow - stick-straight, and tightly aimed - which is what the arrow in some of the imagery represents. This symbolizes determination, and a powerfully focused mindset in order to "hit the target" we're aiming for - while guiding us in the direction of our dreams.
Or in this case, in the direction of the margaritas. Which are THAT-A-WAY. >> While the fox symbolizes logical thought, it also encourages thinking outside of the box, and using our intelligence in different, creative ways. Hands down, this is my mother. My father was an extraordinary linear thinker - he was a guy who gave directions in north, south, east and west instead of up, down, right or left, and who made spreadsheets to hide Easter eggs. While my mother? Once made us an epic doll house out of milk crates, and hand-crafted the entire interior from whatever else she could find and a shit-ton of glue. Barbie Dream House got owned. #@$*ING BRILLIANT. |
The Hummingbird.Hummingbirds are masters of movement - they're the only birds than can stop on a dime, fly forwards, backwards, side-to-side, and hover in place, skillfully maneuvering their way through life. The motion of their rapidly beating wings creates the symbol of infinity - which makes them a powerful symbol of eternity and continuity. Many cultures believe they're a link between heaven and earth. They also happen to be my mom's favorite bird.
After my dad passed away, my mom, sister and I took a trip to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah. At the visitor center, there were hummingbirds EVERYWHERE. Hundreds and hundreds of these beautiful and angry little birds. It was a poignant and powerful moment. Bucket-loads of tears were shed. And I say they're angry little birds because - have you ever actually LOOKED at one? I mean, really looked? This picture was taken at my feeder a couple of years ago. It was begging for a profanity bubble. In addition to being profane little symbols of eternity and continuity, they're also associated with many things that remind me of my mom :
Hummingbirds are also associated with courage, determination, joy, and the lightness of being. Their migration pattern spans 3,000 miles, which reminds us that there will times when our own journeys are difficult, and will sometimes require endurance and perseverance. (And rum). Like Mamas (and Papas) everywhere, they encourage us to be persistent in the pursuit of our dreams, and to always seek out the beauty and joy in life. Like this. |
